Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is meant for construction sites, where supplies have to be transported around on unpaved surfaces. The proper and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is very important to ensure the wellbeing of both the driver and other personnel at the work site.
Terrain
Even if these trucks are made for rough terrain, you still should be very careful so as to prevent tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, should just be operated on level ground.
Speed
Even if there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules governing forklift speed restrictions, forklift operators should drive at a safe speed every time. Driving on uneven or rough terrain needs even more caution. Steering, particularly, could be very dangerous at higher speeds.
Incline
Keep the load on the uphill side of the equipment if operating on a slope. The rule of thumb is drive up, and back down. Never try to raise a load when operating on a sloped surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the machine to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift drivers are obliged to wear seat belts. Check that the overhead guard is securely in place. Depending upon the working environment, hearing and eye protection may need to be worn. Check that a functioning fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift could be affected by weather. Turning, load handling and speed may need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
